FIRST PHOTOS EVER

Today’s workshop has been particularly special for many reasons: it has been our first one with an ethnic minority, (the tompuon community who lives in Yeak Loam lake), it has been the first one conducted by one of the artists we are collaborating with, all the participants have been grown up adults and, last, we haven’t taken an active role in it. Chhea has explained the eight men who gathered at Yeak Loam’s cultural centre the basics of photography and usage of the camera. Most of the attendants have never used a photo-camera before and they were very into it, observing and practising with careful attention. All of them were cheerful using it and discovering the different possibilities that it has to offer them.

The participants have been able to experience freely by themselves for some hours and they really enjoyed it. Then, we joined again to see the works together. It is amazing how quick these people have assumed the principles of visual arts, they have shot some awesome photographs and their quality is really impressive when you realize it was their first time. Today we have felt that, for different causes, everybody involved in the activity has had a great time, and it has made us especially happy.
