ROAD 71

We feel the need of dedicating one post to this road. After many hours on the worse national road that you could expect (specially knowing that it connects the main touristic places in Cambodia, Siem Reap and Phnom Penh) we started biking the 71 with a bit of fear, the lines on the map weren’t even continuous what meant that is a secondary one…

After only three minutes it started raining. We had to stop, again, after so many disappointing moments that day, it was just the last straw…we stopped once more, laying on the porch of a lady that kindly offered us shelter; we were all looking to the ceiling, resting, not much talking, just waiting the rain to stop. And it did. Hoping it wouldn’t rain again we restarted biking.…

The air was fresh, the asphalt was good and, as we left the village of Kampong Thmar behind, a beautiful landscape showed up at both sides. There wasn’t much traffic and the road was in shade… after half an hour we started feeling so well; all the stress and the frustration of these days disappeared as we crossed rubber plantations, beautiful little houses, green fields with cows and pigs… All the bad stuff was gone with the soft wind and the fresh feeling of the wet road, and we traveled for long time just crossing some “this road is beautiful”,’yeah”…

There were many hills, and, for the first time in Cambodia, we had the feeling of going up and down, it was nice, specially the downs where you could go quite fast…

We stopped at Chmkar Leu, a village in the middle of the road that, although it was not too big, it had at least five guest houses. Fresh night, nice dinner, better sleep, dreaming of a world full of roads 71…
